  • Barnet's Youth and Connexions Service aims to enable young people to identify their aspirations through a wide range of creative and challenging learning opportunities.
  • Barnet Youth and Connexions Service offers opportunities to all young people aged between 13 and 19 years but targets specifically vulnerable young people and those living in deprivation.

Youth Opportunity Fund

The Government is giving money to local authorities to develop youth banks so that young people aged between 13-19 (up to 25 for those young people with a learning disability) can make decisions about how money is spent on activities in their area.

Barnet has been given £199,556 to spend by March 2008.

Only young people can decide how this money gets spent.

Young people from Revz Motor Project have applied for money to buy some 2nd hand motor bikes to do them up and then race at a track. A group from the Grahame Park estate have been awarded money to set up a football team.

If you or your group have activity ideas click here for more information and an application form.

Barnet Schools Are Winners

Over 130 young people from Barnet Secondary schools attended a special ceremony at the artsdepot in North Finchley on Tuesday 3rd October to celebrate the second annual Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement and Leadership schools awards worth £67,100 to the Borough. The event brought together students from 17 Secondary schools, including 2 special needs schools and 5 youth organisations.

The winners each received a medallion to go with their framed certificate and cheque for £300 for the school. Leadership Awards were also presented and these are achieved for demonstrating, in an outstanding way, an ability to encourage and motivate young people. Winners received a gilt medallion, framed certificate and a cheque for £1,000 to be spent on their school.

Award winners are selected by their peers and not for what they have achieved. Prize money has mostly been spent on extra resources and equipment for various departments in the schools. The event was organised by Barnet Youth and Connexions Service and MC was Mick Quigley, from Barnet Council.
